The next time you see a rainbow in sky it's probably from Facebook.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has revealed that Internet.org is working on ways to use drones and satellites to connect the billion people who don't live in range of existing wireless networks.
Their Connectivity Lab is developing a laser communications system that can beam data from the sky into communities. This will dramatically increase the speed of sending data over long distances.
Normally you wouldn’t be able to see the actual beams, but for this demonstration they made them visible. This is just one connectivity project they’re working on, and he was excited to share this the Facebook community already.
Optical tracking from an airborne drone could be tricky especially for the uplink. Keeping those drones static in the atmosphere for precise signal transmission will be a real hard nut to crack, One of the questions is, how will they maintain continuous transmission while accounting for weather, and wouldn't the drone's flying motion restrict transmission from your ground nodes?
Is this a realistic long term solution? the latency associated with Satellite is barely acceptable now. Are you considering LEO Satellite Constellations. How would the Facebook platform evolve with the issues of high latency especially now as personal broadcasting is rising as the next killer app, inevitably the next evolution there will be interactive live personal broadcasting.
This is really great project, connecting the whole world with free internet. But what about the terrorist using this as an advantage for their evil purposes? Are there also enough security to be enforced?
I'm just wondering what exactly the beam is made of. Is it like gamma rays or something else?
Furthermore, if it will be blasted at us over time, could there be any biological backlash? Any health concerns we should be aware of rising from these beams? Will these laser will have any negative impact on atmosphere levels ? Will it be harmful or beneficial for ecosystem ? Is there any possibility of it causing problem with airline safe flying passage ? If in the future my hair stopped growing, you know the reason. Lol!
We wish Mark Zuckerberg and his team the best of luck on their heroic mission, We congratulate them for their efforts in connecting the collective human race.
